About Disaster Response

Disaster strikes in an instant, but shelter and housing needs remain
Supporting families affected by disasters requires immediate, comprehensive and collaborative actions. Long after humanitarian aid organizations have completed their relief work, the need for quality shelter and housing remains for months and years.

Habitat’s response to disasters

Habitat’s Disaster Response focuses on the housing needs that arise from natural disasters and humanitarian emergency conflicts. We offer expertise in technical information; program design and implementation; and disaster response policies, protocols and procedures. We also provide support and informational resources for disaster mitigation and preparedness―helping communities in disaster-prone areas protect themselves against future threats.

More than 50,000 families worldwide have been served under Habitat’s disaster recovery programs.

Featured program: Haiti recovery

On January 12, 2010, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Haiti, near Port-au-Prince. 3.7 million people were affected. An enormous number of homes were damage or destroyed and more than 1.1 million Haitians were left displaced or homeless.

Habitat’s Disaster Response is expanding efforts to help families through a multi-phase strategy of response. Read about Habitat’s rebuilding efforts in response to the Haiti earthquake and learn how you can help.
