The Hughleys Celebrate Their New House, Habitat's 100,001st

The Jimmy Carter Work Project 2000 is winding down today, but not before a last hoorah in Sumter County -- the dedication of Habitat's 100,001st house.

Eugene and Michele Hughley are owners of the 100,001st house -- designated the first house of the More Than Houses: Rebuilding Our Communities campaign, which will help fund Habitat's 5-year 100,000-house goal.

The former President and Mrs. Carter will be on hand today to celebrate alongside the Hughleys at the site of their new house in Milestone Estates in Plains, Ga.

Mrs. Hughley, in an interview last week, said, "It's pretty exciting. I don't know if he [Carter] will remember me. I'm from Plains and used to work at SunPointe. I saw him there sometimes."

Eugene and Michele, parents of three-and-a-half-year-old Asiah, have been in training this week to become correctional officers for the new Sumter Youth Detention Center. Both of them graduate today -- the same day that they become Habitat homeowners.

"We'll have new jobs and a new house -- a whole new life," Mrs. Hughley said.

Reflecting on this week's JCWP experience, Hughley expressed that she appreciated the great "teamwork, capital T. I thank God for the crew."

The Hughleys attend St. Mark's African Methodist Episcopal (AME) church, which Michele said contributed, along with other Plains churches, to her house.

The Hughleys are one of 157 families that now have decent, affordable housing as a result of this year's JCWP.
